Encounter 8 YOU HAVE INSIGHT
Nobody in this world knows you better than you know yourself. Nobody knows God like God’s Spirit knows God. You have been offered the gift of God’s Holy Spirit. Through God’s Holy Spirit he will give you insight into what God is like, and what he wants you to do.
TALK TO GOD: “Thank you, God, for giving me your Spirit. You know me so well, and I will trust your Spirit to help me know more about you. Amen.”
INVESTIGATE GOD’S WORD: Read 1 Corinthians 2:9-16 (Memorize verse 12)
MAKE IT PRACTICAL:
I WONDER – Read Romans 7:15-8:2
Since you have become closer to God, have you been fighting against certain thoughts and habits you used to never give a second thought about? Do you ever wonder why this is happening?
Picture your life as a door. Before you became a Christian, wrong actions were like nails being pounded into the door and left there. When you asked Christ to forgive you, all the nails you had collected were removed! Unfortunately, what was left was a door full of holes – not very pleasant to look at and not very useful. Paul knew this all too well, as you can see if you read Romans 7:15 - 8:2. Like Paul, we’re all tempted to give in to our desire to do wrong. Our new nature moves us to resist. Likewise, you’re experiencing a new sensitivity to sin.
This new sensitivity means two things:
First, this is a sign that the spirit of God has truly entered your life (Romans 8:9). Otherwise, you would still be numb to the nails of (sin) if you had rejected Christ’s forgiveness.
Second, it means that God is reminding you of his love for you (Romans 8:38-39). He doesn’t want you to be left scarred by the consequences of wrong actions, so he begins at the source of it – your thoughts.
KEEP IT REAL – Read Isaiah 7:9
Are you experiencing trouble trying to living your life for God?
Are you still putting people down, swearing, quick to anger, partying, drugs/alcohol, sexual promiscuity?
Are you having a hard time saying NO to people that tempt you with things you know is wrong?
Did you ever try telling someone you can’t because you’re trying to quit and they laughed at you, saying you’re to “good” for them now? Or what are you doing here then if you’re not going to drink, have sex, etc.?
Look changing your life for God does NOT mean you can no longer have fun. BUT really think about it: Most of those things you were doing were not all that fun “maybe at the moment” but be honest with yourself.
How do you “REALLY” feel afterward or the next day?
Do NOT ever be ashamed of your faith, you’re always going to make mistakes, relapse, give into temptation at moments, but that does NOT mean you’re not changing for God (That’s the devil putting those lies into your head).
Look the more you meditate in God’s word these temptations diminish completely in time, but you have to pray daily, and read his word! You will not be able to win this battle on your own, you need the Lord's help daily.
Are you thinking right now :
“But I’m not that bad, or what I’m doing is not that wrong, it’s not like I’m out committing murder or something”
But every sin is equal in the Lords' eyes. The more you grow your relationship with the Father in heaven you will slowly begin to understand you’re trying to walk the path holding God’s hand & the Devil’s.
(Is it hitting you now?)
Read Matthew 6:24 “No one can serve two masters. For you will hate one and love the other; you will be devoted to one and despise the other.” And put Isaiah 7:9 is your daily practice “If you do not stand firm in your faith, you will not stand at all.” Pray to God to make you a stronger Christian. To stand firm and not give in to the pressure of temptation.
Let today's studies be a turning point for you, to learn more about your faith and God’s promises, and more about how God’s Holy Spirit will work in your life. Spend more time meeting positive friends of faith, attending church functions. The church is a place full of Christians struggling with the exact temptations as you.
The church is your support system to help you overcome, and become closer to God. It’s always going to be difficult at first, but through time and practice you will see that God’s promise is real he is always here to protect you.
EXPRESS YOUR THOUGHTS (Journal Time): How can you put these ideas presented here into action in your own life? In your Journal, write down one question that you’d like the Holy Spirit to help you with. Now take a couple of minutes and just listen to God.
Meditate in a quiet area, close your eyes and inhale deeply then exhale do this three times until you feel relaxed. Keep your eyes closed and empty your brain, think of nothing but the silence and then let it consume you then inhale and exhale one more time and just listen.
If you don’t hear him speak right it okay, just use this time to relax, and just let yourself become one with the quietness and just listen. (it does not happen right away for everyone, but meditation in good for you, meditate regularly in God’s word by reading, and in prayer and then just close your eyes and listen. During God’s word and in prayer you will hear him best of all through listening, just quiet your brain and listen.
Kathy Howard words of wisdom on Meditating on the passage –Meditation is not emptying your mind. It is deep thinking on spiritual truths. As you read, linger over verses that impact you. Ask God questions and “listen” for His answers. Does this passage reveal something you should …
Believe about God?
Praise or thank or trust God for?
Pray about for yourself or others?
Make a decision about?
